Shabbat Shalom - Friday, Aug. 22, 2014

I grew up in suburban Boston. While the majority of kids in my school were not Jewish, many of my close friends were. During my middle school years, I experienced one anti-Semitic incident, in a gym locker room. A Jewish friend of mine (who happened to be much bigger than both me and the guy who made the anti-Semitic remark) stepped forward and put an end to the whole incident. That was the only time in my 44 years that I directly experienced anything overtly anti-Jewish targeted directly at me.
Just yesterday, a Jewish student on the campus of Temple University was physically attacked. All over Europe, there have been countless anti-Semitic incidents carried out against Jews.

Shabbat Shalom - Aug. 8, 2014

I awoke this morning, like so many of you, to hear that Hamas has broken the cease-fire. I saw someone post on Facebook: "Israel Ceases – Hamas Fires."

We will continue to defend Israel’s actions to protect her citizens: Jews, Muslims, Christians, Bedouins, Arabs, Druze, etc.

Shabbat Shalom - Aug. 1, 2014

I was amazed, inspired and awestruck at the JCC gymnasium-filling crowd that came out last Sunday for the Federation's Israel Solidarity Rally. We estimate 2,500 in attendance! The cooperation between and among over 70 agencies, organizations, churches and synagogues demonstrates how in tough times we can all come together to speak in one voice. Pulling this off was our fabulous Federation staff, and I want to thank them for their herculean efforts.

Shabbat Shalom -- July 25. 2014

This week’s message is very simple and very clear.

Join our community this Sunday for an Israel Solidarity Rally at 4:00 pm. We are blocking off Darlington Road right next to the JCC in Squirrel Hill and hope to have a big crowd outside to show our support. In case of rain, there is a backup plan, so this rally will take place no matter the weather.

Shabbat Shalom - Friday, July 18, 2014

I begin to write this message on Thursday night. Several hours ago, Israel began her ground offensive to try to destroy the network of tunnels used by Hamas to transport weapons into the Gaza Strip and to try to launch attacks against Israelis. My thoughts and prayers go to all the Israeli soldiers who are being put in harm’s way.
